Hiking Enchanted Rock | The Steve Gomez Collection (1990s)

The pink granite dome that gives Enchanted Rock Natural Area its name has inspired countless myths and legends. The Tonkawa people that once occupied the region told stories of ghost fires and hauntings, while Spanish explorers spread tall tales of untapped mineral wealth. The natural scenery, however, is enough to fascinate any visitor. Beyond the dome itself, Enchanted Rock Natural Area also protects patches of vegetation known as vernal pools. These fragile habitats develop when water collects in low spots of the otherwise bare granite rock. This 1990s home movie captures a group of friends hiking to the summit of Enchanted Rock—1,825 feet above sea level.
