Mustang Island State Park | The Baylor Family Collection (1979)

Like Galveston Island farther up the coast, Mustang Island was once occupied by the Karankawa people. European explorers arrived in the early 1700s, perhaps bringing with them the wild horses that gave the island its name. This home movie shows the Baylor family enjoying the sandy beaches of Mustang Island State Park in 1979. No mustang encounters, however—ranching fully displaced the herds by the late 1800s.
