Amistad Dam (1960s)

The naturally changing course of the Rio Grande has been a source of border disputes between the United States and Mexico since the nineteenth century. Amistad Dam was the second of two dams built along the lower Rio Grande to stabilize its uncontrolled waters (and prevent further river-related diplomatic conflicts). Completed in 1969, the dam also created Amistad Reservoir, a 65,000-acre lake at the Rio Grande's confluence with Devils River. Produced by the International Boundary and Water Commission, this silent footage captures the surrounding area from both the top of Amistad Dam and the rocky shore of Amistad Reservoir.
