The White Island (1963)

Protecting 70 miles of coastline, dunes, and prairies, Padre Island National Seashore is the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world. The island has gone by several names over the centuries, including Isla Blanca (White Island) and Isla de los Malaguitas (Island of the Malaquites, a band of Coahuiltecan people). The current name honors Padre Nicolas Balli, who established the island's first permanent settlement around 1804. In this 1963 television documentary, produced by the Special Projects Division of Houston's KPRC-TV, News Director Ray Miller reviews the park's natural features.
