San Solomon Springs has served as a vital natural resource for thousands of years, from prehistoric hunter-gatherers and the Mescalero Apache to Mexican farmers and white settlers. As personal car ownership soared in the early twentieth century, the Texas State Parks Board also saw it as a choice stop for vacationing motorists. The Civilian Conservation Corps made camp in 1935, constructing roads and adobe visitor cabins—each with its own garage. This 1964 home movie, however, captures the biggest contribution made by Company 1856 to Balmorhea State Park: a double-wing swimming pool built at the headwaters. At 1.3 acres, it remains the largest spring-fed pool in the world.
