Texas State Bison Herd | The Weidman Collection (1998)

In 1882, Charles Goodnight began purchasing vast acres of land in the Texas Panhandle to create the J.A. Ranch—part of which would later become Caprock Canyons State Park. At the urging of his wife, Mary, the famed rancher raised bison as well as cattle on the property. Genetic testing later determined the Goodnight bison to be among the last "pure" remnants of the southern plains herd. The JA Ranch donated the animals to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in 1996. In this 1998 segment for CNBC's The News with Brian Williams, Roy Welch explains TPWD efforts to capture and transport the 36-bison herd to a 320-acre enclosure at Caprock Canyons.
