Battleship Texas | The Easterwood Family Films (1958)

Launched on May 18, 1912, USS Texas saw action in both World War I and World War II, including D-Day and the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. In 1948, the battleship made anchorage along the Houston Ship Channel near the San Jacinto Monument in La Porte, Texas, to begin a new life as a permanent floating museum. This home movie captures the Easterwood family aboard Texas in 1958. Years of neglect left the historic battleship in serious disrepair, prompting the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to assume control of its maintenance and restoration in 1983.
