Goliad State Park and Historic Site | The Baylor Family Collection (1979)

Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zúñiga, or Mission La Bahía, was one of several missions established in Texas during the Spanish colonial period to convert local Indigenous people to Roman Catholicism. Its accompanying military fortress, Presidio La Bahía, was the site of two major events during the Texas Revolution: the 1835 Battle of Goliad and the 1836 Goliad Massacre. By the time the state acquired the land for Goliad State Park in 1931, the historic mission lay in ruins. Civilian Conservation Corps Company 3822, an all-veteran unit, reconstructed the mission's stone church, granary, cloister, and workshop. They also built a museum to house unearthed artifacts. This home movie captures the Baylor family exploring Goliad State Park and Historic Site in 1979.
